PLAYS

A List Of Completed And In Progress Works

JAR!

“JAR!” is a comedy/socially political play that revolves around a chicana and her life living with three white roommates, while attending a predominantly white school. The narrative follows the protagonist on her journey navigating a PWI space while learning how to speak up for herself when it comes to her Mexican culture. To do this she creates a Jar system. In the apartment, she has placed a jar on the coffee table and written the words “White Jar” on the glass, with torn bits of white paper on the side. The rules are, when the roommates say or do something that might be comically or stereotypically white, the chicana calls “JAR!”. Then it is their job to place a white piece of paper inside the jar. The hope is to create a fun way to alleviate tension while also creating awareness to starting a conversation for some topics. The main conflict that must be resolved lies within the protagonist. The white jar still presents some struggles, as the protagonist is still afraid to speak up sometimes. Will the people around her even understand why something made her uncomfortable or why it could be offensive? Will they feel attacked? So the protagonist uses the audience as a way to explain her struggles with navigating when or what to say around white people. It goes to show the pressures placed on a poc when they are the only one in the room.
